Traditional membranes sit on the surface. They can be punctured during backfill, they depend on installer skill, and when they fail below grade the repair means excavation.
Integral crystalline waterproofing takes a different route. The admixture is dosed into the mix at batching, where it reacts with water and unhydrated cement to grow needle-shaped crystals deep in the matrix — sealing capillary pores and micro-cracks from within.

Basements require a combination of solutions to prevent water ingress: crystalline waterproofing applied to concrete walls and floors, membrane waterproofing for exterior foundation walls, and proper drainage systems such as French drains and sump pumps.
It depends on the method. Crystalline waterproofing is permanent, as it integrates with the concrete. Liquid membranes last 5–15 years depending on quality and maintenance. Sheet membranes last 10–25 years depending on material and installation.
